The way we looked at it back in my Retail days... was a thank you to our customers for pointing out changes we missed when updating our shelves!
Now if only all retailers looked at it the same way, you wouldn't have to fight and scream to get them to follow something they have agreed to follow.
If you see the above sticker posted at the cashiers tills or on the front doors of the retail establishment that you are shopping at, that have voluntarily agreed to follow this practice... Now what exactly is it?
If the scanned price of a non-price ticketed item is higher than the shelf price or any other displayed price, the customer is entitled to receive the item free, up to a $10 maximum. When the item has a price tagged, the lowest price applies. When identical items are incorrectly priced, the second one will be sold at the correct price.
How does this impact you as someone looking to save money?
We all know that in retail errors are made, but did you know that 99% of those errors are missed by the consumer? So with you being the penny pincher you are, or you dream to be... you will start watching that till as the cashier rings your items through... and with that you will question any and all price issues you see. Sometimes you will be wrong, but often you will be right. But just imagine if you get to walk out with that $10 sale item for FREE!!
My most resent SCOP win was on Frozen Pizzas.... Sale ended Thursday... Friday evening while I was shopping I saw several people picking up pizzas and though....hmmm kids would like those... so walked over to see that they were on for $4.97 each for a maximum of 4... So I grabbed 4.... When I got up to the till, the first 2 rang in at $3.99 but then next 2 rang in at $7.97..... So on the first 2 I gained, but the last 2 I lost out... I questioned this, they verified the shelf, and yes the old tags were still up... So I received 3 pizzas, not only for the $4.97 but $3.99(because they didn't know how to deal with it...could mark them up I guess) and 1 pizza for free. When I got home that evening and studied my bill I realized with all the ins and outs... they only charged me for 1 pizza... (Should I have gone back, probably but the first trip took me 45 mins to check out as they were beyond confused, so I didn't really want to toss another 45 mins and the gas)
Total savings on those pizzas: $16.68.... not bad, for watching the prices as they rang up my order! But remember all those other customers I saw picking up pizzas? I bet they didn't watch and got ripped off! Would you have been ripped off?
